Favorite Travel Destinations and How They've Inspired Our Work

When Rachel set out on a trip to Bali with her mother, she had no idea how powerful the impact would be on her life, career, and design perspective. Taking a page from Rachel’s love of travel, we’re sharing some of our favorite travel destinations and how they’ve inspired the work we do.

Seeing new worlds and how people eat and live can not only open your mindset to other cultures and beliefs but also refresh those creative juices when you feel exhausted or just out of fresh ideas.” - Rachel Reider

This time of the year is often when we think about getting away and exploring new cities and landscapes. And traveling is not only a great way to recharge and reset it’s also one of the best ways to open your mind to new perspectives, cultures, people, and design. Of course, we love travel for all those reasons but most importantly how it influences and impacts our ideas and approach to our client’s design projects. Whether it's colors, texture, or patterns, we are keenly aware that inspiration can come in many forms and work as building blocks when it comes to creating a sense of place in our home and hotel projects.

With so many travel experiences to share, we gathered some of our favorites to show you just how they’ve inspired our work.

Rachel ReideR, Founder + Creative Lead

Rancho La Puerta, Mexico | My time at Rancho La Puerto is all about self-care.  I find it’s in those times when my mind isn’t racing in a million directions that my creativity has room to shine. On this last trip on a morning hike in the mountains, I found myself so inspired by the different textures of nature that I wanted to develop a whole wallpaper line. I was taking pictures that would probably mean nothing to someone else but to me, it was pattern, texture, color, a feeling. The natural landscape was just so beautiful.

Carla Ryan, Director of operations

Chatham, Massachusetts | I love Chatham so much that we ended up buying a vacation home so we can be there as often as possible.  When it came to decorating our home, we chose colors that reminded us of the time we spent in this quaint seaside town. Blues for the sky and sea and beige for the sand from our favorite beach. The use of red as a pop of color in the rooms goes with the Americana feel that the Annual Fourth of July Parade evokes.

Kristina Ranaldi, Senior Interior Designer

Morocco | One favorite that’s top of mind right now is my recent trip to Morocco. I fell in love with the rich culture and history and of course, the vibrant colors, and intricate patterns you can find throughout its many cities.  This inspired the look of the tiled floors and walls in our Edgartown Inn dining room space design. The tile's rich colors gave the farmhouse-inspired retreat common space an inviting and intriguing ambiance.

Erin Kelleher, Senior Interior Designer

Hawaii and Switzerland | I would say the most influential thing about both Hawaii and Switzerland is nature. The ocean and sand color, coastline texture, waves, vegetation, and mountain views collectively inspire the colors and materials I think about in many of our recent design projects. It’s part of creating that authentic sense of place and a one-of-a-kind design feel for our client’s home.

Jess Kaplan, Project Manager

Israel | My favorite country I’ve had the opportunity to visit was Israel. The contrast of colors was incredible to bask in. I loved looking at the orange sands against the turquoise skies surrounded by white and tan buildings speckled with sage green shrubbery. Everything was so bright but felt it was very natural and organic. I try to collect art and piece that evokes the same sense of place I felt while traveling across the country – not shying away from color but allowing the space to speak for itself as well.
