The Design Process: From Puzzle to Presentation Day

People often ask us about our design process and the methods we use to execute elegant interiors. The route from puzzle to presentation day has been fine-tuned over a decade of being in business and we have it down to a fine science.

After the initial phone call and a getting-to-know-you visit, the process usually starts online.  Magazine photos, pins from Pinterest, and folders from Houzz of our client’s favorite things all help us culminate a shared creative vision.  This is probably the most important role our clients play in the design process.  Every once in a while, a trip to the Boston Design Center together is a must to fine-tune likes and dislikes.  More often than not however, we find it efficient to share ideas online to develop a shared aesthetic.

From there, we pull together beautiful, yet practical, fabric schemes and furniture layouts based on careful measurements done onsite.  Fitting the right fabric to the right room takes knowledge about material composition. For instance, you wouldn’t want to put a beautiful silk fabric in a sunny room where it would fade and wear terribly, but it might work in a master bedroom if a client has fallen in love with a particular pattern.

The puzzle eventually takes shape and the pieces fit into place with coordinating fabrics, trims and any embellishments last.  Then comes presentation day and we try not to overwhelm clients with all of the eye-candy laid out before them, room by room.

After a round or two of client feedback and tweaking, we have final schemes ready for pricing and procurement.  Purchase orders are sent and the inevitable wait begins while custom orders are meticulously being made.  Consistent follow-up with vendors ensures that deadlines and expectations are met.

Next the trades are scheduled; beautiful wallpaper goes up, countertops go in, paint colors get refreshed, sparkling new lights are hung, and the vision becomes reality.  Our happiest time at Rachel Reider Interiors is Installation Day when all of the finely crafted pieces of furniture get delivered, set-up by a team of skilled white glove movers and our helpful hands stuffing pillows and making beds.

Fine art and curated accessories complete the final stage to add a personal touch.  The final result is a truly custom, layered home where our clients can relax and enjoy all that they have created with our shared vision.

It sounds easy doesn’t it?  It’s our job to make it so and help our clients enjoy the interior design process.  If you’re thinking that your home needs a refresh, don’t hesitate to contact us today and we’ll follow-up with a phone call.  We are here to help you get your design dream, DONE!

Until next time,
