A Look at Our Favorite Summer Ready Designs

As we welcome in those warmer, longer days, our clients are eager to better understand the latest trends in outdoor design and how to create a vibe that is both summer casual and comfortably sophisticated. In our latest Journal, we’re spotlighting a few of our favorite outdoor design projects to inspire your next backyard retreat.

Through our extensive experience designing destination-based experiential homes in resort towns, downtowns, and suburbs, we’ve developed a keen awareness of the elements needed to produce a space that invokes positive feelings and heartwarming memories. This is especially true when it comes to imagining outdoor places for our clients to gather, relax and play.

Creating a mood, building efficiencies, and focusing on comfort are three important factors to consider when designing your perfect backyard sanctuary. The space should be able to transport you to a beloved vacation memory with all the amenities and comforts of a luxurious 5-star resort. We especially love the idea of pulling inspiration from past travels.  Textures, colors, and even cultural nuances are exciting factors to consider when looking to create that same getaway feeling in an everyday space. And it’s important to keep entertaining top of mind. Working in elements like lighting, custom bar carts, and furnishings inspired by indoor pieces will help to create a backyard you and your guests may never want to leave.

As we kick off the unofficial start of summer, here’s a look at some of our favorite outdoor design projects.

A seamless flow from inside to the outdoors

In our Elevated Indoor-Outdoor Living project, creating an easy-flowing space for relaxing family time and stress-free entertaining was at the top of this active family’s list. So we felt it was important for them to have an open kitchen that seamlessly transitioned into a backyard entertaining space. To accomplish this task, large folding glass doors were used to separate the kitchen from the backyard area, making the indoor and outdoor spaces feel united. Custom elements like a fire pit, bar seating, and cozy gathering spots were also added outside to create a welcoming extension of the home - perfect for all to enjoy!

Making the most of those panoramic views

Creating a backyard space at a coastal property is always an inviting challenge. Typically equipped with a strong sense of place, beachfront vacation homes lend themselves to a welcoming and calming aura rich with natural hues of blues and greens. This was absolutely the case at our Cape Cod Beachfront Vacation Home Project. Utilizing the home’s extensive outdoor deck space, we worked with durable organic and modern elements to create a sophisticated, unobstructed refuge that placed its breathtaking, sought-after views at the center of it.

The Ultimate Weston Backyard Oasis

When designing our Weston client’s backyard of their dreams, we knew that this busy family of 5 (and a dog) needed a space that checked all the boxes when it came to comfort and flexibility. Working closely with architect Kevin ten Brinke along with Sudbury Design Group and Coda Home, we imagined the perfect outdoor space equipped with cozy gathering spots, an outdoor shower, and tons of space to lounge by the pool. These features, in addition to an outdoor chef’s kitchen, pavilion, and landscaping that functioned as space dividers as well as added privacy,  tipped the needle in creating that perfect vacation feel.

Hope this offers you some exciting ideas for your backyard retreat!
